Summer Lecture by Troy Scott Smith

In response to demand from members, we have arranged a special summer lecture, given via Zoom, during our usual meeting “closed season”. The lecture is being given by Troy Scott Smith, head gardener at Sissinghurst on WEDNESDAY 6 JULY at 7.30pm. The topic is “The Delos Project” which is a recreation of a Greek-style garden that Vita Sackville West and Harold Nicholson tried to establish at Sissinghurst.

Cerne Abbas Open Gardens

We would like to invite members of your gardening community to our annual village open gardens event. There will be about 25 gardens open from 2-6pm on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June. We have been holding these events since 1974 and we give the profit to a cause inside the village and another outside.

In most gardens the gardeners are on hand to chat to and most welcome well behaved dogs on leads.
Please circulate this invitation and the attached poster which we would be grateful if you could find somewhere to display.

Many thanks.

Plant Fair Help Needed

Our Summer Plant Fair at Lower Severalls is now just a couple of weeks away. Keep the date – SUNDAY 12th JUNE – free! The Fair will run from 10.00am until 3.00pm and you can pay on the gate – no need to pre-book your tickets for this one. There will also be a range of delicious light refreshments available and a chance to see the garden at an earlier time of year.

We have the following excellent nurseries and stalls coming along from various parts of the south-west (plus one coming from mid-Wales!), and of course the HPS Somerset Group plant stall, to bring you the best of their summer plant offerings:

  • CB Plants
  • Charles Chesshire Plants
  • Exotic Earth Plants
  • Floyds Climbers
  • In Clover
  • Gardener’s Blacksmith
  • Heartsease Plants
  • Japonica Plants
  • Leesa’s Not Just Alpines
  • Misfit Plants
  • Pennard Plants
  • Plant Wild
  • Plants Galore
  • Wild Thyme

We do need a couple more members to volunteer to help on the gate for an hour or two, so if you are free please let me know.

Many thanks

Zoom Talk: Razvan Chisu, The Transylvanian Gardener, will enthuse us with ‘Fifty shades of green’ – Wed 27th April, 7.30pm

Razvan is a UK-based garden designer, writer and lecturer. He grew up in Transylvania in a town surrounded by vast woodlands and species-rich wildlife meadows, a fact that has influenced the way he designs and maintains gardens. He will take us all on a journey into the amazing diversity of foliage, the wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and textures, and then give examples of how foliage plants can be used to great effect in our gardens. At the end of his talk, Razvan will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The cost will be £3 per person for HPS members and £5 per person for non-members. To book and/or to be added to our monthly distribution list for updates on our programme, please send an email asap to monmouthshirehps@gmail.com
